Mourning

In Lorestan, one of the unique customs observed during the annual mourning is the application of mud on the heads of the participants. This ancient tradition takes place during the religious occasion of Muharram and holds deep significance for the local Muslims. Dating back centuries, it symbolizes the unwavering faith and unity of the followers, while erasing any barriers that may exist in their devotion to the third Imam of the Shiites, Hossein bin Ali. As an act of reverence, people willingly cover themselves in mud, humbling themselves before the purity and innocence of Imam Hossein.
